Anthropic brings Cowork directly inside Claude’s chat interface

Anthropic PBC said today it’s trying to make life simpler for its customers by merging its regular chatbot Claude with its agentic artificial intelligence tool Claude Cowork.

The merger, which went into effect immediately, came as the company introduced two new features in beta. They’re called Claude Docs and Claude Slides, and they’re being integrated with Claude alongside the broader rollout of the company’s Claude Design tool, which was also a standalone product, is now being brought right inside user’s chats too.

This seems to be part of a push towards some kind of “superapp,” or a single interface that’s designed to replace the increasingly fragmented collection of AI tools for every little thing, like asking questions, creating images, managing files, coding and automating routine work. The idea is that users would probably rather not have to decide which specific AI product to use, or manually shuffle context across tools. Instead, they should be able to do everything in one place, with the context following automatically.

This kind of integrated experience will have the effect of creating a more direct relationship with users and help increase the time they spend using a single product, and can potentially make it easier for Anthropic to bundle different premium features into a subscription. It can also be more attractive to enterprise customers, as many businesses prefer this kind of simplicity – it allows them to centralize employees’ AI use, and therefore retain more control.

OpenAI Group PBC is also believed to be working towards creating a kind of superapp that will fold ChatGPT, its coding agent Codex and possibly also its AI browser Atlas into one product. Again, OpenAI says the idea is to reduce tool fragmentation so that AI can just switch between answering questions, researching, coding and explaining things within one session.

Despite this, it’s notable that Anthropic’s coding agent Claude Code is still a separate product, unaffected by today’s change, at least for the time being.

Anthropic said in a blog post that before the merger, many customers would struggle to know which AI tab they should choose for a specific task. With the newly integrated experience, Claude will automatically route the user’s prompt to the most appropriate interface – either Claude Chat or Claude Cowork – so the user never has to switch tabs again. Instead, they just use a single frontend to access AI whenever they need it, the company explained.

As for the new capabilities, Claude Slides is all about creating and editing PowerPoint slides. Users will be able to draft new slides, edit them and even present them from directly within Claude, or download them as a PowerPoint or PDF file. Claude Docs, meanwhile, is all about documents – Claude can draft sections of text or help users edit, and multiple colleagues can all collaborate on the same file in real time, before exporting them to Microsoft Word or Google Docs. These new features are being made available to Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers first on the web, desktop and mobile. They’ll also come to Team subscribers and free users in the coming weeks.

With all of these integration, there is a risk that some users could end up paying more for their AI usage. Agentic products like Cowork are designed to reason through multistep tasks and make tool calls on behalf of their users, and this kind of thing can consume vastly more tokens than a simple chat exchange. The problem is, users are billed by token usage. So if the newly integrated Claude decides to end up routing simple questions through its agentic, tool-calling machinery, users could find themselves pushing up the compute cost without even realizing it.
