Reflection AI open-sources Beam’s weights, post-training recipes
Startup Reflection AI Inc. today made the weights of Beam, its first large language model, available on Hugging Face.
The company also released technical resources that will enable developers to customize the algorithm.
Originally introduced last week, Beam is one of the industry’s most advanced open-source LLMs. It features about 500 billion parameters, yet approaches the performance of models four times its size on some benchmarks. It also uses significantly less computing power and memory.
Reflection AI trained Beam over two months using several thousand high-end graphics cards. Such large-scale training runs are prone to errors that can decrease model quality. According to Reflection AI, its engineers addressed the challenge by developing a set of custom reliability optimization algorithms.
The company’s error mitigation efforts placed particular emphasis on avoiding training-inference mismatches. Those are bugs that emerge when there are slight inconsistencies in the configuration of an AI training environment’s components.
Reflection also developed a system that can automatically fix certain data quality errors. When such bugs emerge, the system reverts the training run to an earlier stage and continues from there instead of starting over from scratch. The company says that its optimizations enabled it to train Beam with practically zero cluster downtime.
Beam’s newly released weights are available in multiple versions. There’s a standard edition and several scaled-down variants that keep information in smaller units of data. That arrangement, which is known as quantization, trades off some output quality for increased hardware efficiency.
The weights are available alongside training recipes, code templates that enable users to fine-tune the model. A vibe coding startup, for example, could create a fine-tuning workflow that enhances the model’s programming capabilities. The recipes are joined by tools that can be used to measure how customizations change Beam’s capabilities and safety guardrails.
Reflection AI has also released a drafter model for Beam. It can be used to implement speculative decoding, an inference approach designed to lower hardware usage. The basic idea behind the method is to use a lightweight LLM, the drafter model, to generate the initial version of a prompt response. Beam checks the output for errors before displaying it to the user.
Performing inference in a hardware-efficient manner requires developers to use a software tool called a serving engine. Adapting an LLM to a given serving engine can involve a significant amount of work.
Today’s release includes ready-to-use Beam configurations for several popular serving engines. Developers also have access to fused kernels, code snippets that compress multiple inference calculations into a single operation to speed up processing.
Reflection AI plans to follow up the launch by releasing additional training recipes in the coming days. They will enable Beam to refine its own output quality using an approach known as self-distillation. Additionally, the company intends to share some of the lessons it gleaned while developing the model in the form of contributions to open-source AI tools.
