Enterprise Storage Meets Mobility and the Cloud

TappIn and QNAP have announced a new partnership that will integrate TappIn’s content mobility solution with QNAP’s NAS devices. The integration allows users to securely access any content stored on QNAP’s NAS from a web browser or Internet connected mobile device. The TappIn and QNAP partnership is just another signal of the growing importance of anywhere access to enterprise content.

Technology leaders are struggling to keep their content secure in an environment where users have access to thousands of free gigs of cloud-based storage. Service like Box and DropBox initially targeted consumers with freemium cloud-based storage, but now they are making big enterprise pushes. Many technology leaders are uncomfortable using cloud-based storage for sensitive content, which has created a market for vendors like TappIn.

Last month, EMC partnered with Oxygen to announced a solution that enables mobile access to EMC Atmos, Isilon and VNX storage systems. EMC also purchased Syncplicity, a solution for accessing local storage over the cloud. Companies like Oxygen, Syncplicity and Mezeo are targeting enterprises that want to address consumerization, without the risks of the public cloud.

Although the solutions enable mobile access, it’s unclear if it will be enough to stop users from moving corporate content to the services where they store family pictures and movies. Storage, cloud and consumerization are all moving quickly. New vendors and products are entering the market and needs are evolving. Independently each of these areas is complex, but the trends aren’t independent. They are converging creating a long list of questions and challenges for businesses.
