Apple iOS 6 Now Available For Download
Today’s mobile news roundup features: iOS 6 now available for download; Samsung’s plans to add the iPhone 5 in a lawsuit; and HTC Windows phone now available for pre-order.
Apple’s iOS 6 now available
If you’re one of the few people who are holding on to their iPhone 4S a little longer and haven’t pre-ordered or won’t be lining up to get the iPhone 5 tomorrow, then you’ll be pleased to know that iOS 6 is now available for download. Apple states that there’s more than 200 new features available with the iOS update but if you look closely, some are just minor tweaks, not really new features.
The most notable changes are the new Maps which no longer uses Google Maps, the Panorama feature of the camera, and of course the Passbook. But before you press that update button, you might want to wait a bit, some users who already upgraded their devices reported having issues with connecting over WiFi.
Just to be sure, better hold off on updating for now but so far, I haven’t encountered problems when I updated my iPhone 4S. It still connects to WiFi and the new Panorama feature takes clear, wide photos, you just have to be really patient when taking it as you have to move the iPhone quite slowly. As for the new Maps, a lot of people are saying that it’s crappy but haven’t tinkered with it yet.
Samsung to add iPhone 5 in lawsuit
Samsung Electronics is pursuing another lawsuit against Apple and it looks like they’re adding the iPhone 5 to their complaint. This is a different case to the one wherein Samsung lost to Apple and was ordered to pay more than $1 billion for damages. In the new filing, Samsung is accusing Apple of violating eight of their patents, and Apple accused Samsung of violating eight of their own patents. But before Samsung can include the iPhone 5, they said in a filing that they need to carefully examine the said device before they can make any changes in their lawsuit.
Judge Lucy Koh is presiding over the new case and scheduled a hearing next Wednesday with attorneys from both Apple and Samsung to discuss how the trial will proceed. The trial date is tentatively set for March 2014.
HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S now available for pre-order
HTC announced two new Windows Phone 8 smartphones yesterday, which feature Super LCD 2 displays coated with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, Beats audio for better sound quality, an 8MP sensor rear camera with ultra-wide lens and a 2.1MP front-facing camera and both cameras support full 1080p HD video capture. The only notable difference in the devices is the screen size. The 8X features a 4.3-inch screen while the 8S’s screen is slightly smaller at 4 inches. Reports state that the HTC devices are now available for pre-order in the UK and costs £398.98 for the 8X while the 8S costs just £224.98. The devices will start shipping on November 5 for the 8X and on on November 15 for the 8S.
