Teradata Steps Up with New Hadoop Appliance, Software Trial

Business intelligence firm Teradata had a couple of major product updates this morning. The company unveiled a new integrated big data appliance, and announced a free version of its MapReduce framework.

The Teradata Aster Big Data Appliance is an all-in-on solution that offers users  a more simplified way  to leverage Hadoop. The offering leverages two of the company’s patented technologies, SQL-MapReduce and Aster SQL-H, and is supposedly  up to 35 times faster than the average off the shelf bundle. It also features up to 19 times the throughput, Teradata says, and plenty of customization to boot.

The Big Data Appliance can handle structured and unstructured info equally, thanks to dedicated parallel engines for each workload type.  It ships with a built-in set of management apps for admins, as well as ready to run functions that cater to a broad spectrum of use studies from marketing optimization to fraud detection.

“As Apache Hadoop moves from early adopters to the main stream, organizations require enterprise-class, unified system management and the ability to tightly integrate with their existing analytical tools to ensure success,” said Rob Bearden, chief executive officer, Hortonworks. “The combination of Teradata’s world-class data management and analytics capabilities, with the unmatched reliability of Hortonworks Data Platform, provides a truly unified, high-performance big data analytics architecture for the enterprise.”

Teradata’s second announcement today is the launch of Aster Express 5.0, a free trial version of Aster SQL-MapReduce.  It’s available for download immediately and installs with the same database software that makes it possible to analyze a broad range of data on the company’s new enterprise box.

Teradata has been very active lately. Its data warehousing platform was recently selected by Peru’s commerce department to store regulatory and taxation data on a massive scale.
