Alfresco Ups Security, Extends File-Sharing Cloud to AWS

The latest edition of Alfresco’s flagship product offers enterprises document management capabilities on Amazon Web Services. The open-source platform supports public and private deployments, as well as  hybrid environments that offer improved support for mobile workers.

“As the only vendor on the market to offer the same simple and scalable open platform for the enterprise in the cloud, on-premise or both, Alfresco on Amazon Web Services is a document management solution that makes business processes more efficient. Three ways to use Alfresco on AWS include Alfresco in the cloud powered by Amazon, private instances of Alfresco on AWS and Alfresco One featuring hybrid cloud sync.”

The revised software can be deployed on AWS, private clouds, on-premise infrastructure or various combinations of three. In addition, Alfresco taps into the AWS Management Console to deliver accessible monitoring capabilities, and leverages third party solutions from Amazon partners such as 8kMiles, and Xceedium.

The solution also offers extensive database support. MySQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server can be deployed to handle metadata, while user files are automatically stored on S3.

The big differentiator between Alfresco and Dropbox is that it’s open. Its OOP-inspired modular architecture gives IT the option of tailoring the interface for all the different users logged into the corporate network – be it mobile workers or a particular team handling sensitive info. The platform also features some built-in security and version control capabilities on top of that.

Alfresco’s update crossed the wire around the same time Oracle announced a new database security offering of its own.  Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall was debuted this morning with the premise of advanced network monitoring that analyzes activity to detect anomalies and potential threats.
