Learn Objective C at Code School
Code School is a community of web professionals who help beginners (and the advanced) learn about web programming and win badges via videos, in-browser coding, and themed challenges. The site has a number of courses available, such as Ruby, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and iOS apps. Making latest development to the site, Code School has now added a course designed around learning Objective C with a gamification twist.
Objective-C is the language used by Apple and their developers to create iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps. Pitched as ‘Try Objective C’, Code School has created the course in the conventional gamification manner that gives a very ‘Mario world’ feeling. Five levels are available starting from easy to difficult, which are:
Level 1: Grass World
Level 2: Ice World
Level 3: Sand World
Level 4: Lava World
Level 5: Space World
Passing on to each level, you can not only learn Objective C, but also earn cool badges from the website. Here’s what the site states on start of first level:
“You are about to learn Objective-C, the language used by Apple and Apple Developers to create iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps. You don’t need any prior experience to take this course, but you do need a desire to pay attention to the details.
To get the most out of this course, we suggest going through it at least twice. You might be surprised about how much more you pick up the second time through. We’ve tried to make it as simple as possible to get started. There are no downloads: all challenges are done right here in your browser.
When you are finished, you can start learning how to make iOS apps.”
In fact, I also tried the Level 1 of learning and it looked pretty cool to me. Objective C expert “Mr. Higgie” teaches the language in a really simple and easy way, with examples at every step.
“Gamification can be an important part of education, if you’ll excuse the rhyme,” says Kyt Dotson, DevOpsANGLE editor. “Code School provides a curiously graphical look into different coding processes and perspectives. It’s not exactly an advanced production, but for people looking for the beginner-to-intermediate (and there’s a lot of them out there) this looked pretty interesting.”
