Standing Cloud Acquisition and $9M Funding to Reinforce AppDirect Cloud Marketplace

San Francisco-based AppDirect, which offers a cloud service marketplace and distributed web-based management platform, announced it has acquired Standing Cloud, a Boulder-based start-up offering cloud management services, such as automated software packaging and orchestration.

Founded in 2009, Standing Cloud has deployed packaged services to a wide range of cloud partners, including IBM, Amazon, Savvis and Rackspace. The company’s packaged apps are used for cloud services to ease the complexity of deploying and managing apps. The integrated software includes more than 100 applications including Magento, WordPress, Drupal and SugarCRM.

AppDirect sought to add Standing Cloud technology and expertise to handle private clouds apps and will be able to offer package apps and manage the orchestration into different marketplaces. The deal makes Standing Cloud’s marketplace of apps a compliment to the public cloud apps management services that AppDirect sells through telecoms, data center companies and other clients.

“Both AppDirect and Standing Cloud have worked to develop technologies that make the cloud easier to use. With this acquisition, we can join forces to accelerate the speed of innovation and move faster than ever before,” said Daniel Saks, president and co-CEO of AppDirect. “We’re thrilled to work with a team that’s as excited about cloud services technology as we are.”

As part of the acquisition, AppDirect will become part of the Foundry Group portfolio of companies, which has major investment in Zynga, SendGrid, CloudAbility, and Standing Cloud.

“From day one, we’ve been impressed with AppDirect’s technology and the passion of its team. AppDirect clearly shares our vision for making cloud technologies more accessible and easier to use, and we’re looking forward to all of the great things we can achieve together,” said Leslie Osborne, VP of Product and Operations at Standing Cloud.

In addition to the acquisition, AppDirect has received $9 million B round of funding lead by its existing investor iNovia Capital, which brings the app marketplace’s total investment to $20.8 million. The new round of funding will help the company to expand its global cloud computing market.

AppDirect helps developers to integrate their apps into various online application stores across multiple marketplaces worldwide. It’s AppDirect Developer Incubator Program, a unique 3 year program designed to give developers a risk-free way to pursue their dream of launching their own startups. For developers, the ADI program is a great way to gain technical and business experience all while working with an expert team that knows how to deliver industry-leading solutions.
