Red Hat Updates RHEL 5 with Expanded Third Party Support

Reiterating its commitment to support Linux distributions for at least 10 years, Red Hat has rolled out a new version of Enterprise Linux 5. First released in 2007, the operating system will receive regular updates through March 31, 2017 and until 2020 with Extended Upgrade Support.

The latest RHEL 5.10 release ships with MySQL 5.5 and the Red Hat Support Tool, a utility that automates problem diagnosis and provides console access to online customer resources. Also included in the platform is an updated version of the OpenSCAP security configuration solution, and new system functions for managing subscriptions.

Other minor improvements include support for Creative Recon3D audio cards and the HP P430i 12GB Smart Array controller.

Jim Totton, the head of Red Hat’s Platform Business Unit, commented that “the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.10 continues Red Hat’s commitment to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 platform’s 10-year lifecycle, with new capabilities to provide platform viability for years to come. With an emphasis on security and stability, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.10 includes new tools, like Red Hat Access and OpenSCAP, to help systems administrators enable platform reliability and enhanced security for even the most mission-critical applications.”

The release of RHEL 5.10 comes on the heels of new Openshift services for integrating cloud applications with back-end processes and data. Over the coming months, Red Hat’s platform-as-a-service suite will be augmented with business process management capabilities, mobile push notifications, and simplified application integration.

The company announced the Openshift update just a few day after putting its weight behind Docker, an open source container-based virtualization framework for Linux. In collaboration with developer dotCloud, Red Hat will enhance the tool and package it into Fedora OS.
