Dataguise enters the governance horse race with new suite

Dataguise Hadoop securityHaving established a name for itself as a provider of Big Data security tools, Dataguise is is tackling governance.

The company used last week’s concluded Gartner Security and Risk Management Summit in Washington to announce the immediate availability of a new suite of tools aimed at making it easier for CIOs to manage policies, access rights and compliance across a broad range of DBMS. Dataguise for Data Governance is integrated with the company’s flagship DgSecure platform, which protects and regulates access to information in Big Data and traditional repositories.

Dataguise said the suite is designed for simplicity. It packs a collection of pre-defined policies for handling credit card numbers and personally identifiable data, as well as rules for files governed under the HIPAA healthcare privacy and security laws. It also features a graphical wizard for creating custom rules tailored to meet granular requirements.

Additionally, the offering sports an automated discovery feature that allows users to find and track sensitive data both in motion and at rest throughout their organization. Dataguise said such functionality is almost impossible to replicate manually. Governance pros can inspect access permissions down to the user- and element-level.

Zettaset offers similar functionality to what Dataguise is offering in its recently updated Orchestrator tool, as does XA Secure, the startup that Hortonworks picked up in mid-May. But while most competing solutions only work with Hadoop and complementary open-source components such as HBase, Dataguise for Data Governance supports a broader range of open-source and commercial systems including Oracle, IBM DB2, SQL Server and Teradata.
