Cyborg Unplug
Many establishments are now banning the use of Google Inc.’s Glass in their premises to protect the privacy of their patrons, but Glass isn’t the only device that has the capability to slyly record data in public settings. There are many other glasses that have discreet cameras that could be used for voyeuristic purposes, whether they unintentionally record others without permission or used for spying.
Julian Oliver, a Berlin-based artist and coder, released a free software product called Glasshole.sh that can be installed on a Raspberry Pi and plug it into a USB network antenna to start sniffing out Glass. When one is detected, it uses the Aircrack-NG to impersonate the network to deauthorize and disconnect the Glass’ WiFi connection.
To make the software more consumer-friendly, Oliver plans to start pre-selling a device called the Cyborg Unplug later this month, which makes the software much easier to use – just plug it in to start patrolling wireless networks. Business owners can receive alerts when concealed cameras and mics are detected, while also silently booting them off of any network they try to connect to.
