Take the ultimate selfie thanks to Nixie, the wearable drone

Nixie, a wearable drone that lets you take selfiesThe drone craze meets the wearable tech craze. Meet Nixie, a prototype wearable quadcopter drone equipped with a camera that you can use to capture the ultimate selfie.

A finalist in Intel Corp.’s ongoing competition to inspire new wearable technology ideas, the project is the brainchild of Christoph Kohstall (a physics researcher at Stanford), and is built in collaboration with team members Jelena Jovanovic and Michael Niedermayr.

If you are looking for an alternative to sticking your arm out to take yet another selfie, then Nixie is aimed at you. Essentially a wristband with a built in drone, Nixie will fly off your wrist, find you and take a photo, and then immediately return to you so that you don’t lose it.

Unfortunately the Nixie is still little more than a concept with an early prototype that can launch itself and fly away. There is clearly still a lot of work to be done, especially judging by the fragile look of it.

The good news is that Nixie is a finalist in Intel’s ‘Make It Wearable’ competition and has just scored $50,000 in funding as well as mentoring, design assistance and technical support directly from Intel.
