“The way we interact with data will be driven by search,” said Splunk Inc. Chief Technology Officer, Todd Papaioannou. Splunk relies on search to extract value from unstructured data, being what Papaioannou referred to as “the next-gen data fabric of unstructured data.”

In a live interview from the annual Splunk conference with theCUBE co-hosts Jeff Frick and Jeff Kelly, he explained that Splunk’s “search language is the interface to the underlying data,” and on top of that applications are being built. In terms of applications, Splunk’s approach is to let their customers lead the way. “There is a thriving ecosystem of other people building apps on top of our platform and we welcome that,”Papaioannou stated.

Splunk is adding more data streams, and according to Papaioannou, the platform can take any type of data. “Anywhere there machine data, that’s where we go,” he added. Splunk also targets Hadoop and Amazon S3 data, helping customers drive value quicker from their Big Data programs.
