Cloudian integrates Apache Hadoop to turn Big Data into ‘smart data’

Hybrid cloud vendor Cloudian Inc. has expanded into Big Data analytics by fully integrating the Apache Hadoop platform into its HyperStore software. In addition, it’s also joined the Hortonworks Technology Partner Program and achieved full Hortonworks’ certification.

HyperStore version 5.1 is a plug-and-play hybrid cloud software solution that’s fully compliant with Amazon S-3. By integrating Apache Hadoop, businesses will be able to turn Big Data into “smart data” by running Hadoop analytics atop of HyperStore and appliances, Cloudian said.

“Analytics is the foundation of smart data. To store data on a smart system like HyperStore, and run Hadoop on top of it, offers huge business advantages to enterprises in terms of scalability, efficiency and cost savings,” Paul Turner, chief marketing officer at Cloudian, explained.

“From the financial industry to medical research, there is no shortage of markets that will benefit from turning big data into smart data in pursuit of realising market- and revenue-shifting insights.”

Cloudian’s HyperStore allows enterprises and service providers to build scalable storage solutions, and its compatibility with Amazon S-3 makes it an ideal solution for organizations that wish to take a hybrid approach towards storage – keeping some data in the cloud and some on premises. Cloudian, which burst onto the scene in 2011, has been backed to the tune of $40.7 million in investment from Goldman Sachs, Intel Capital, INCJ and Fidelity. It currently boasts some 45 paying customers, while more than 400 organizations use the community edition of HyperStore.

The idea behind Apache Hadoop integration is that enterprises can run their Big Data solutions directly on top of HyperStore and appliances. It’s a much more efficient approach to the traditional method of pumping data into other systems to be analyzed. According to Cloudian, this ‘in-place analysis’ provides more flexibility and achieves results much faster, and the company backs this up by citing a number of use-cases.

Cloudian said the new release incorporates a number of other new features too, including an improved management console and user interface, new security features, support for OpenStack Icehouse, and the ability to replicate and recover Big Data geographically across different data centers.

Finally, Cloudian said it has successfully completed testing to achieve Hortonworks certification, which means its customers can access the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP).

“We are pleased to welcome Cloudian to the Apache Hadoop community and look forward to working with them to help strengthen Hadoop’s role as the foundation of next-generationcloudian architecture,” said John Kreisa, VP of strategic marketing at Hortonworks.
