Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Showcase by Force 3 at VMworld 2010
Force 3, a provider of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) technology, will be giving a showcase at this year’s VMworld 2010 conference about their product family. They are a VMware Premiere Partner, so we expect them to know a thing or two about VDI. Within their presentation, they will outline some of the myths surrounding the technology,
“One of the main myths about implementing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is that the user experience suffers, so we wanted to create a solution that can ultimately be cost effective and help to better manage resources, but also provide a rich user experience that is on par with a physical desktop,” said Sudhir Verma, Director of Data Center Solutions for Force 3. “By using innovative technologies from VMware, Cisco, Violin and FalconStor, we’ve created a solution that proves that user experience and cost are no longer barriers to moving to a virtualized environment.”
Being able to keep a personalized desktop machine-to-machine, or to promote the desktop of a remote machine to the current interface, has long been the holy grail of virtual offices since Xerox Park. Too often, users get tied down to the feeling that they need to be physically at a box to get the feel for what that machine is doing; however, with the advent of virtual desktops, it’s possible to control a machine (desktop and all) from miles away.
From the presentation, Force 3 wants to show that they’ve been able to overcome some of the stigma with user experience and virtual desktops by bridging the disconnect between user and virtualized environments. Usually, user experience suffers from response lag and difference in interface learning curve. Two of the products merged by Force 3, FalconStor and Violin, seem to directly combat the slow-response problem by greatly increasing responsiveness.
Of course, Force 3, will also in their sales pitch pointing out how their virtualized solution would likely provide more aggressive pricing for user experience than standard physical desktop environments.
Another related showcase that Force 3’s Senior Solution Architect, Sam Lee, will be presiding at will be “VDI Mythbusters” where some of the above perceived issues with virtualization will be detailed.
