Bioware’s 4v1 game “Shadow Realms” has been canceled
Reports surfaced earlier today that Shadow Realms, which was being developed by Bioware’s Austin location in Texas, had been canceled, and now Bioware has confirmed that the rumors are true.
Shadow Realms was announced last year at Gamescom and was intended to be an episodic series focusing on 4 vs 1 combat not unlike Evlove, which is releasing tomorrow. Shadow Realms was described by lead writer Hall Hood as “a modern fantasy for modern players.”
“While the team did amazing work on the game concept and we got lots of great feedback from our fans at events and through other game testing, right now there are other projects for the team to work on within the BioWare studios for the coming year and beyond,” wrote Bioware Austin’s general manager, Jeff Hickman. “We’ve got an incredibly talented team here at the Austin studio, and they are excited and already deep on new projects within the BioWare family, ones that will make some great BioWare games even better.”
Hickman explained that the team would be shifting its focus to developing more content for some of its existing games, especially Dragon Age: Inquisition and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
“As every Star Wars fan knows, this is a massive year in the Star Wars universe,” Hickman wrote, referring to the upcoming release of the seventh Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, in December. “We have some great plans for expanding this epic game this year, and look forward to sharing the news about those plans with our players in the coming weeks.”
The news of the cancellation of Shadow Realms comes the same day as Bioware’s parent company, Electronic Arts, announced a series of layoffs in its Montreal office. While there have been no layoffs for Bioware, it is notable that the company has backed off of a new IP to focus on best-selling brands that already have name recognition going for them.
Hickman apologized to the fans who had been anticipating Shadow Realms, and he stated that the team is working on a way to thank those who had signed up for closed alpha access.
