Oracle Hires Hewlett-Packard’s Ex-CEO Mark Hurd as New Co-President

As previously reported here by Kristen Nicole, Hewlett-Packard’s Mark Hurd has made his way over to Oracle. As written currently byReuters,

Hurd, a close friend of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, will join as president, replacing Charles Phillips, who has resigned. Phillips was co-president alongside Safra Catz, who remains in her role.

While he left his job at HP in the midst of a scandal, Oracle may be looking for the windfall of receiving an experienced technology sector manager on their side. Already the market has given Oracle the boon of a 7.7 percent bump in share price this Tuesday after the announcement.  John Furrier comments,

“Hurd will do well at Oracle since the culture there is very operational, with no question on the direction of the company led by Larry Ellison.  Unlike at HP, where there was leadership issues at the top that had to do with direction and roadmap of the company, Oracle gets the marching orders from Larry himself.  So execution is very much top down verses the bottom up HP Way.

I expect that Hurd, given his friendship with Larry, will do well at Oracle.  Oracle needs to be more efficient in order to compete with more of the open models developing.  Given the big legacy position of Oracle they need to present to their customers economic reasons for staying with Oracle.  Hurd will be effective in steam-lining that kind of deliverable.  Also Larry has always surrounded himself with operational talent.  Again Oracle is top down and Hurd will thrive there.”
