Crowdfunding has fast become the go-to resource for inventors, entrepreneurs and startups to fund their projects. In today’s roundup we take a look at three of the most popular projects in the tech category on Kickstarter at the moment. These projects have obliterated their initial funding goals and are drawing huge amounts of support from backers.
The creators of Tiko got tired of modular 3D printers that are not only expensive, but require constant calibration and often jam, shift or even fail entirely. The Tiko features a unibody design with fewer moving parts and requires almost no assembly.
Tiko is a delta 3D printer with three sets of arms moving in unison to control the movement of the print head. It boasts a print resolution as low as 50 microns and allows for the use of a wide range of printing materials, including PLA, ABS and nylon.
At $179, its one of the most affordable 3D printers available and judging by its success on Kickstarter, it is also one of the most popular. At the time of writing, the company had raised more than $1.6 million from 9,482 backers against an initial goal of $100,000, with 17 days to go on their Kickstarter campaign.
Orders are expected to ship in November 2015.
Created by Candy House Inc., Sesame is a smart lock and mobile app that wants to replace your house keys. Sesame fits most makes of single cylinder deadbolts used in the U.S. and a number of other countries and is easily installed using only a piece of 3M tape. Once activated, users can unlock their door using the app or a custom knock on the door. Users can also remotely unlock doors for friends and family. Sesame’s lithium batteries will last up to 500 days and the lock automatically notifies users if the battery is running low.
Available in a range of colors, including a wood finish, Sesame has already raised over $900,000 from 6,023 backers against an initial goal of $100,000, with 13 days to go on its Kickstarter campaign. Orders are slated to start shipping in May 2015.
SnapPower is a USB charger integrated into a power outlet cover plate that can be installed using only a screwdriver. It is a 1-amp USB charger that can be used to charge mobile phones, tablets, hotspots and more. The best part about the SnapPower is that there is no need to fiddle with any wiring. It has “Power Prongs” that clamp onto and draw power from the exposed crews found in standard duplex and décor outlets.
Available in three colors and two styles, SnapPower has blown through its initial $35,000 funding goal on Kickstarter and has already raised more than $640,000 from 14,617 backers.
