New technology and open source at EMC | #emcworld
CJ Desai sat down with John Furrier and Dave Vellante of theCUBE during EMC World 2015 to talk about new tech developments at EMC. Desai is the president of EMC’s Emerging Technology Division.
The discussion opened up with an overview of what Desai and his group does at EMC. He mentioned that the team’s major goals were to provide an infrastructure that scales and creates stateless applications for Clouds. Recently, they’ve developed an open source version of the ViPR controller called Project Copperhead.
Supporting the community
Desai then took a moment to speak about the DevOps event EMC hosted. The event was a sold-out success. The idea behind the event was to bring together the community around EMC and to help it share its ideas. One of EMC’s future goals is to support that community and earn support from them as well.
Project Copperhead represents another example of supporting the community. It has the same features and functionality as ViPR but will soon be available for anyone to download.
New technology, new possibilities
The talk then turned toward ScaleIO and DSSD. Desai answered the question of where ScaleIO fits in the marketplace by pointing out that it supports many architecture options and that it scales linearly across a huge number of nodes. This gives companies great flexibility to grow with ScaleIO.
As for DSSD, an all-flash data storage array, everyone was impressed by its extremely low latency. “The way I look at DSSD is, first of all, server attached,” Desai said. “It’s server attached and shared storage.”
He continued that because of DSSD’s speed, it was suitable for high-performance real-time applications, such as facial recognition. Further, applications will be able to run on DSSD without any changes.
Finally, things wrapped up with a look at what was driving new innovation in the group. Desai acknowledged things had changed for EMC. Its new focus was on scalar architecture, leveraging the power of next-generation flash storage and creating a software-defined portfolio that can run on commodity. “It’s not your father’s EMC,” he said.
