Ubisoft games coming to a virtual reality headset near you in 2016
The second coming of virtual reality is all talk, little action so far, but with the Facebook Inc. owned Oculus Rift due for release next year, Lazarus may well rise from the dead.
One of the keys to virtual reality taking off in 2015 versus the 1990s will be content, and there was great news Wednesday with Ubisoft Entertainment S.A. announcing that it will be bringing its franchises to a virtual reality headset near you.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot made the announcement during a Q&A session following an earnings call, saying that “We believe a lot in virtual reality because we see that it is really giving a chance for gamers to be more immersed in worlds, and we are developing a certain number of games that are going to take advantage of these new possibilities.”
“We are working on the different brands we have to see how we can take advantage of those new possibilities, but making sure also we don’t suffer from what comes with it, which is the difficulty to play a long time with those games.”
“We are very bullish about the potential. We think it is going to bring more players to the universe of video games, and we are going to come with our brands. We will have a few titles in the first year and we will have regular games coming following that.”
Guillemot did not say which titles will end up being given the virtual reality treatment, but it doesn’t take much to have a guess about titles that could work a treat in a VR headset, such as Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and even Watch Dogs.
The mention of concern about how long players can play a game in virtual reality is a reasonable one, with some reports saying that long term exposure to modern VR headsets can cause sea-sickness like effects, and “virtual reality sickness” even has its own Wikipedia entry. Recent reports though suggest that a cure might be as simple as having a virtual nose.
No date was given for the release of the VR titles only that they will likely be released sometime in 2016.
