IBM places bets on new technology | #IBMEdge

Mobile has led to a profound digital transformation. According to Gartner, the number of network- or Internet-enabled devices is expected to reach about 25 billion by 2020.

“It’s not just about mobile; it’s about what mobile enables,” Tom Rosamilia, senior VP of systems at IBM, told theCUBE during IBM Edge2015. “It’s not just about the Internet of Things, it’s about what’s now doable and learnable. What can I analyze? What can I act on?”

Turning data into usable insights

To turn this massive amount of data into usable insights, Rosamilia said the industry needs infrastructure. “We need technology that will enable us to use those mobile transactions,” he stated. “When you think about a purchase, up to 100 transactions can take place from that one mobile transaction.”

theCUBE cohost Dave Vellante noted a shift toward combining technology, such as analytics and transaction systems. Rosamilia sees that trend as bending the curve of innovation. “Even at the level of systems innovation, the memory and the processor of the Power8 are superior,” he said. “The number of threads is also important.”

Advances in quantum computing design

Rosamilia said that IBM plans to invest $5 billion in advanced technology. The company is also making advances in quantum computing design.

“You’re going to see more [from IBM] around silicon photonics and context computing,” he said. “There is a lot of potential. We’re placing bets.”
