The iPod lives! Apple unveils new iPod touch, A8 chip, 8MP iSight camera, new colors

Following rumors last month suggesting Apple had a new iPod touch in the works, Apple on Wednesday introduced a new version of its iPod touch music and media player – the first update to the device since 2012. (via 9to5Mac)

The sixth-eneration iPod touch features a 64-bit A8 CPU, 4-inch Retina display with 1136×640 resolution, a 5 megapixel front-facing FaceTime HD camera and 8 megapixel rear-facing iSight camera – equal to those found on the iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2.

“iPod touch gives customers around the world access to Apple Music, the App Store and iOS, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system …,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone, iPod and iOS Product Marketing. “With big advancements like the A8 chip and the 8 megapixel iSight camera, customers can experience next-level gameplay, take even more beautiful photos and enjoy their favorite music, TV shows and movies.”

Externally very little has changed, but the iPod touch is available in new dark blue and pink case options, as well as a gold option to match the option available on the iPhone and iPad.

Three models are available: a new 128 GB model for $399; the 64 GB model for $299; the 32 GB model for $249; and the entry-level 16 GB version for $199.

The new iPod touch also boasts the same M8 motion processor found in the iPhone for fitness, steps and elevation tracking and supports the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard for faster connectivity.

Pre-loaded with iOS 8.4 – including Apple Music – users will be able to upgrade to iOS 9 when it is released in the fall.

The iPod shuffle and iPod nano also received a makeover, although this is limited to new color options, including dark blue, pink and gold, while the technical specifications and prices remain unchanged.

Sadly, there is no sign of the rumored 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch version, or Force Touch technology for the screen.

The new iPod touch, iPod shuffle and iPod nano is on sale now, and you can compare iPods before deciding which one to buy.
