Hands-on labs from ‘any modern browser’ | #VMworld

The partnership between VMware, Inc. and XtremIO is a match well made. Powered by XtremIO’s flash storage network, VMware has been able to create a catalog of over 40 labs that it offers to its users, customers and the general world … all for free.

Dave Vellante of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke to Pablo Roesch, director of technical marketing for VMware, and Sakthi Chandra, director of solutions marketing at EMC XtremIO, about the true extent of the use of its hands-on labs and just how much consumers and the companies themselves are benefiting from the partnership.

According to Roesch, VMware’s offering of over 40 different products can be accessed by anyone with a “modern browser” and is made possible by EMC’s XtremIO flash storage array. Chandra of EMC added that when a user accesses one of these labs, within seconds a VM is created by the user, used by the user and ultimately dissolved. This means that the over 400,000 labs that have been taken by users are incredibly resource-intensive at the data center.

The verdict is in

Vellante asked Roesch about the analytics used to track users of VMware Labs. Roesch mentioned that the average time spent by a user is roughly “90 minutes,” a rather impressive figure considering that 400,000 labs have been taken by users. The partnership between VMware and EMC XtremIO have allowed current customers, partners and even users looking to practice for certification a free means to try out the many offerings of VMware has and are allowed the seamless user experience thanks to XtremIO’s flash array development.

Roesch noted the benefit of being able to demonstrate to consumers its product offerings and the revenue that’s generated, while Chandra pointed out that in “588 days, $0 to $1 billion” in revenue was generated from their XtremIO solution.
