NodeSource debuts enterprise-hardened Node.js runtime

NodeSource Inc., one of the hottest startups in the Node.js ecosystem, is widening its focus beyond developer tooling and support services with the launch of a new hardened version of the framework that promises to help organizations take better advantage of server-side JavaScript. The launch is a response to the rapid uptake that the technology has enjoyed in the enterprise lately.

That meteoric rise of Node.js can be traced back to the 2009 European JSConf web developer meetup, where Ryan Dahl, one of its co-creators, received a standing ovation after presenting a functioning chat server he managed to implement in under 400 lines of code using the framework. Word of the project quickly spread from there the broader developer community.

The fact that Dahl and his colleagues tapped JavaScript for the project instead of creating their own special syntax contributed much to its early success, enabling web programmers to apply their existing knowledge to building backend software. That premise quickly catapulted Node.js to mass adoption, at which point its numerous users started spreading their enthusiasm about the technology into their workplaces.

And the rest is history. The new  N|Solid framework aims to give the rapidly growing number of organizations that are picking up Node.js a solid foundation on which to build their new-generation JavaScript services. One of its main differentiators is a set of built-in performance monitoring capabilities aimed at making it easier for developers to check the efficiency of their code.

That includes both processor and storage utilization, as well as other key metrics that N|Solid extracts from application logs to provide visibility into the various operational processes that help support a workload under the hood. This improved visibility is coupled with a security mechanism that NodeSource says can help users prevent unauthorized code from tempering with that logical clockwork.

Rounding out N|Solid is a subscription to the startup’s existing round-the-clock customer care offering, which provides organizations with the assurance they have someone to call the if anything happens to go wrong with their implementation.  NodeSource says that the platform is already finding use with several big-name customers, most notably NASA and Condé Nast.
