Witcher dev promises Cyberpunk 2077 will be “far bigger than anything” it’s done before
It has been over three years since Warsaw-based game studio CD Projekt RED announced that it was working on Cyberpunk 2077, a sci-fi RPG based on the Cyberpunk tabletop role-playing games, and so far the developer has released very few details about the project.
Of course, that is not really surprising considering the fact that CD Projekt was also busy creating The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the most expansive game to date in the studio’s popular Witcher franchise. But now in a recent interview with MCV, visual effects artist Jose Teixeira revealed a few hints about Cyberpunk 2077 that suggest an epic scope that will be even bigger than the already enormous Witcher 3.
“Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before,” Teixeira said. “Far, far bigger. We’re really stepping into the unknown in terms of complexity and size and problems we encounter”
Teixeira admitted that creating such a massive game would not really have been possible without the studio’s experience creating The Witcher 3, and the lessons learned from that game are being put into practice in the development of Cyberpunk 2077.
“If anything, working on The Witcher 3 was a really good and often brutal learning experience,” he said. “Cyberpunk is going to benefit greatly from it. I can almost guarantee it. I have a lot of things that I want to change and do better the next time around, and I can guarantee that almost everyone in that studio has something that they go ‘I did this this time, next time I can do it differently, I can do it better’.”
There is still no word on when gamers can expect a release date for Cyberpunk 2077, and CD Projekt is not exactly known for churning out new releases, especially for games of this scale. The lack of a release date could be one of those lessons the studio learned while creating The Witcher 3, which had its own official release date pushed back more than once.
Then again, The Witcher 3 did end up selling over four million copies within its first two weeks alone, so a delay on Cyberpunk 2077 would not necessarily be something to worry about.
