Oracle works on openness | #oow15

After some hiccups, Oracle is working toward a platform of openness, according to James Governor, analyst and cofounder of RedMonk, LLC, a developer-focused industry analyst firm.

“They have to be more developer friendly,” Governor told John Furrier, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Oracle OpenWorld 2015. “If they want to get into platform extensions and Infrastructure as a Service, they will have to work with developers differently.”

Java remains a critical part of the enterprise development landscape, Furrier noted. “That has to be critical for Oracle,” he said. (In 2009, Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, which had Java and Solaris as software assets.)

“The idea that Java is just for old line companies is wrong,” said Governor, who noted that the Hadoop ecosystem was written in Java.

Whether in Java or some hot new platform, development matters, said Governor. “Companies need to be agile,” he said. “They also need to build an infrastructure that enables them to keep running even when it fails.”
