As video content grows in popularity, companies put even greater demands on data storage and management. This creates another level of complexity: managing the data about the data.
“Video is easy to consume and is becoming easier to create,” said Dave Tang, SVP of corporate development and strategy and general manager of the cloud infrastructure business unit for HGST, Inc. “But it’s more than just the content. It’s the ability to find the content and understand the context in which the content was captured. In addition to video streams, content needs to be indexed. The ability to identify players, the plays, the opponents, all of the things you would want to search on at a later time to call up past clips … those are creating stronger demands for storage computing.”
Tang discussed Big Data’s impact on sports with John Furrier and Jeff Frick, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during SportsDataSV 2015. He sees sports as a microcosm of Big Data and IoT.
“The customer/fan experience and their engagement can be improved based on data,” he said. “Teams can make a better product. Sports are a fantastic way to emphasize the value of data.”
Analysts refer to the current Big Data movement as the “third platform of computing,” Tang explained. “The key characteristic is massive scalability to take on the growth in data, as well as the ability to stretch computing capabilities when you need to. This all relies on software-defined infrastructure. That’s what enables you to scale at massive levels.”
