Blizzard updates 15-year-old ‘Diablo II’ to make it play nice with modern PCs
While Blizzard Entertainment Inc has plenty of shiny new games like Overwatch to occupy its attention, the study has not forgotten its classics, and today Blizzard released a new update for Diablo II to resolve issues the now 15-year-old game has when playing on modern hardware.
“It’s been a long time coming, but today we’re releasing 1.14a for Diablo II,” Blizzard said in a forum post.
“This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems. In related news, you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.”
“We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities. There’s still work to be done, but we’re making improvements every day.”

It may seem strange for Blizzard to spend time updating a game that came out well over a decade ago, but Diablo II is one of the studio’s most beloved games and is frequently held up as one of the best action role-playing games of all time.
The franchise is still going strong today with Diablo III, which managed to overcome its rocky early days with a number of updates that addressed users’ most serious complaints about the game, and its first expansion, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, sold over 2.7 million copies in its first week when it was released in 2014.
According to several new positions posted on Blizzard’s job board recently, there also seems to be something new in the works for the Diablo universe, and in its post describing the changes made to Diablo II, Blizzard made some rather cryptic comments about more to come for the series.
“There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us,” Blizzard said in its post. “This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers.”
Whatever Blizzard has up its sleeve probably will not be revealed any time soon, but Diablo fans will likely be closely following every word the studio says about the series in the near future.
