Cloud services bring the Big Data advantage to companies large and small | #BigDataSV
The Big Data revolution has transformed companies across the tech world, but not every business can afford to upgrade to this new technology. Big Data demands a high cost in infrastructure and skilled personnel. However, Cloud services provide a new option. Companies can purchase remote Cloud computing on demand, without the expense of setting up their own systems. This has opened up Big Data to businesses small and large.
To get some inside information on Cloud-based data services, Jeff Frick (@jefffrick) and George Gilbert (@ggilbert41), co-hosts of theCUBE from the SiliconANGLE Media team, spoke with Marcy Campbell, SVP of sales and busines development at Qubole, Inc., during the BigDataSV 2016 event in San Jose, California, where theCUBE is celebrating #BigDataWeek, including news and events from the #StrataHadoop conference.
The new market
The discussion started with a look at the market for Cloud services. Campbell said that Qubole started its sales pitch by talking about the value of Big Data and the Cloud, but as it turns out, those trends were already happening. The new story, she said, was about structured and unstructured data, and how to get that information to the customer.
Companies, Campbell pointed out, are transforming their environments by allowing sharing and the transfer of data across their organizations.
A difference of approach
The main difference for Qubole, Campbell said, is that the company offers a service. This allows businesses to buy into Qubole’s Cloud offerings without a lot of up-front infrastructure costs. Looking at the sales model, she said, Qubole has been talking to people who are building Big Data platforms. The value of the Cloud, she continued, is in being able to scale, but also able to process data at speed.
Concerning Qubole’s strategy, Campbell said they’re looking for people with data in the Cloud. From there, the sales people can put together a demonstration that allows the company to test the service against their own data on-premises. In the end, she said, Big Data drives large workloads to the Cloud.
“I believe personally that the Cloud’s going to take over everything,” she said.
