Oculus Rift officially launched more than two weeks ago, but it looks like some fans who pre-ordered the high end virtual reality headset will have to wait a bit longer for their device.
Oculus VR LLC already admitted earlier this month that there would be delays for some pre-orders.
“We’ve been working through an unexpected component shortage, and unfortunately the issue has impacted has impacted the original shipping estimates for some early customers,” Oculus said in a statement earlier this month (via Polygon).
A number of users on the Oculus subreddit have claimed that despite having ordered their Rift within hours of pre-orders going live, their original April delivery dates have now been pushed back as far as June or later.
There have been plenty of users railing against Oculus for failing to honor its original delivery dates, but fortunately, there have also been a few users who have managed to keep their sense of humor about the situation:
While delayed pre-orders are never a good thing, Oculus is hardly the first hardware maker to deal with post-launch supply issues.
PlayStation and Nintendo Co., Ltd. have both had their own difficulties meeting consumer demand after launching a new console, particularly during the holiday season.
Shortly after launch the launch of the PlayStation 2, which would go on to become the highest selling gaming system of all time, Sony Corp. faced similar supply difficulties, and like Oculus, the issues were caused by a shortage of components.
Still, for the first premium virtual reality device to hit the market, Oculus has not set a good precedent for the industry, and for many consumers, it may be a good idea to wait for all of these problems to be ironed out before investing in an unproven $600 device.
