What you missed in cloud: Old rivalries are cast aside

As organizations continue moving and more of their internal workloads to the cloud, it’s becoming increasingly important for traditional IT vendors to address the trend. Last week, VMware Inc. joined the bandwagon by announcing plans to make its virtualization offerings available on AWS.

The product lineup includes the company’s flagship hypervisor, its VSAN network management tool and the complementary NSX software-defined storage platform. VMware said organizations will now be able to manage the applications they run in AWS the same way as their on-premise workloads. Moreover, the company has pledged to collaborate with Amazon on selling their combined offering to the enterprise. The companies said they hope the alliance will put them in a better position to support the rapidly growing  number of hybrid cloud deployments out there that combine on- and off-premises infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the same organizations that are migrating their workloads to platforms like AWS are also increasingly relying on on software-as-a-service providers to support key business processes. It’s much more convenient buying on-premises licenses, but cloud subscription costs can spiral out of control if they’re not managed properly. One of the startups working to address the issue is the Indianapolis-based Zylo Inc., which raised $3 million in seed funding last week from a group of early-stage investors.

The startup will use the fund to widen the adoption of its cloud monitoring tool, which allows organizations to see how much they’re spending on software-as-a-service subscriptions and cancel underutilized accounts. Plus, it also provides features for surveying employees about their usage patterns.

On the same day Zylo announced its funding, another cloud startup called Postman Inc. secured a $7 million investment of its own from Nexus Venture Partners. The firm offers a browser extension that promises to help developers implement APIs for their software projects faster. It’s complemented by a hosted collaboration platform where engineering teams can share their work and test programming interface in a unified view.
