Bold launches its enterprise publishing platform and adds a Slack bot

The cloud-based collaboration market is jam packed with document sharing tools, but Bold Inc. believes that there’s room for one more.

The startup, founded by Ben Lee and David Byttow, founder of the defunct anonymous sharing app Secret, on Thursday announced the general availability of its IO publishing service, which aims to provide a one-stop hub for managing internal company content.

One of the platform’s main selling points is a minimalist text editor that makes it possible to author documents without the distraction of unnecessary menus. When a user creates a new file, a literal blank slate appears that features only a thin, auto-hiding toolbar at the top with a few saving options.

Workers can control the design of their documents using inline text commands that work a bit like Slack emoticons. Typing “/h1,” for instance, turns a line into a header with all the appropriate formatting, while writing “/images” triggers a drop-down media insertion menu. IO enables users to embed most everything from photos and GIFs to code snippets into their posts.

Meanwhile, in the background the platform provides what Bold calls “Assistants” that help with various aspects of the creative process. One Assistant is called Hemingway and generates stylistic guidance, while Ambience plays themed ambient noise designed to evoke feelings such as sitting in a coffee shop. They’re complemented by a newly added Slack bot that allows workers to share documents with peers through their company chat channels.

Moreover, it doubles as a control system for managing and organizing posts. The latter task is made even simpler by a built-in document search engine that Bold says provides a more convenient alternative to using traditional folders. Workers can not only look up posts but also feedback from peers, who can share their input via a native commenting system.

IO is available starting at $5 per active monthly user.
