Lenovo announces new augmented reality smart glasses at CES
Lenovo Group Ltd. today announced its latest Google Glass competitor, the Lenovo New Glass C200, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Similar to the first generation Lenovo C1 augmented reality headset and Google Glass before it, the device is a monocular smart glass system that recognizes and identifies real-life objects using artificial intelligence. It was designed to provide commercial customers the ability to undertake their work in an improved fashion by allowing users quicker access to information and connect with remote co-workers more easily.
The new AI recognition assistant can perceive scenes via computer vision using a two-stage engine recognition, with the primary engine being used to identify object category and location, while the secondary engines are specific recognition engines which are in the form of plug-ins. In addition, the company said, the device can quickly learn target object data by running deep learning neural network algorithms.
The product comes in two parts, the Glass Unit itself and the supporting Pocket Unit for central processing unit support. Weighing under 60 grams, or about two ounces, the Glass Unit runs on Linux and by using only one eye is said to enhance a user’s perception of “mixed reality” while viewing the AR world simultaneously with the real world.
Users download the New Glass app to their smartphone, then plug in the pocket unit into their phone to interface with the Glass Unit, delivering what Lenovo describes as more processing power and enhanced CPU performance than comparable devices. “The New Glass C200 allows you to gather information in your field of view, provide step-by-step directions and instructions for repair, identify disabled equipment and troubleshoot issues with a remote colleague all while your hands are free,” the company said in a statement sent to SiliconANGLE.
Pricing details and date of availability were not available at the time of publication. It will be demonstrated at CES. The product is one of a flurry of device announcements at CES by Lenovo.
