

A month after completing its landmark $26 billion acquisition of LinkedIn, Microsoft Corp. has added one of the business network’s top technologists to its leadership team.
The new arrival is Kevin Scott, who will assume the newly created post of chief technology officer. TechCrunch noted that the executive isn’t the first person to have landed this title at Microsoft, but until now, it has been used mainly by individual departments. Scott’s role in contrast stands to encompass all of the company’s technology initiatives and will see him report directly to Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella.
Scott is joining Microsoft’s top brass after working as senior vice president of infrastructure at LinkedIn for six years. He previously spent two separate stints with Google Inc., first as an engineer and more recently in the role of senior engineering director. Scott took a detour in between to lead infrastructure operations at AdMob, which was eventually acquired by the search giant, between 2007 and 2010.
The executive’s LinkedIn profile highlights he also became involved with several nonprofits along the way, including the Anita Borg Foundation for Women in Technology. A newly created biography of Scott on Microsoft’s website adds that he racked up a few patents in the field of search and information extraction.
Nadella has high hopes for the appointment. “We are thrilled that Kevin will bring to Microsoft his unique expertise developing platforms and services that empower people and organizations,” the executive said in a prepared statement. “Kevin’s first area of focus is to bring together the world’s leading professional network and professional cloud.”
In other words, Scott will lead the planned integration between Microsoft’s products and LinkedIn. Satya revealed last month that the effort will place a particular emphasis on making profile information and networking features available from Office 365. Salespeople, for instance, will gain the ability to search for prospects on LinkedIn directly in the Dynamics customer relationship management applications.
The integration initiative comes on top of all the other responsibilities that come with leading engineering efforts at one of the world’s largest tech firms. As CTO, Scott will oversee a vast operation that spans from social networking and cloud services to artificial intelligence research.
