

Online payment processing firm Stripe Inc. said Thursday it’s launching Increment, a quarterly publication aimed at a software engineering audience with input from many of the world’s leading tech companies. But the bigger news is the editor-in-chief: Susan Fowler.
Fowler, who famously detailed what sounded like a year in hell at Uber Technologies Inc., had accused the company of not supporting her after she had complained of being sexually harassed by her boss. Her explanation of sexual harassment, sexism and general chaos within the upper levels of management at Uber has forced the company to examine its often-criticized work culture.
As an engineer and author, Fowler has written a book about building microservices architecture, and before that worked as an engineer at PubNub and Plaid, according to her LinkedIn page. She took up a position at payments company Stripe in January, where it seems she has been working on creating Increment.
In a statement to Recode, Fowler said joining Stripe was an easy decision. She said her role at Increment is to flatten “the distance between the Silicon Valley elite and developers everywhere.” Patrick Collison, chief executive and co-founder at Stripe, echoed this, saying, “Increment aims to illuminate the most sophisticated practices from the best companies in the world.”
The first issue (pictured) titled “On-Call” is now out, focusing on on-call practices and incident response. Industry leaders including Google Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc., as well as scores of other industry leaders, were interviewed for the issue. It deals with such things as strategies for having developers on-call when things go amiss. For instance, Amazon tells Increment, “You don’t ‘own’ the code you write, unless you run and maintain it, too.” Companies explain their strategies for doing this.
Each issue will have a different theme, Increment says, shared with readers with the impetus of having them submit their own ideas for upcoming content. Increment will also be taking submissions.
