Fastly launches edge cloud platform to speed up content delivery at the network edge

Fastly Inc. is expanding beyond its content delivery network roots with the introduction of a new “edge cloud” platform that offers a range of new capabilities for developers at the edge of the network.

Fastly was founded in 2011 and has proven to be a massive hit among publishers, as its platform provides them with full control over the content they serve, along with access to real-time performance analytics and the ability to cache frequently changing content at the edge.

The company says its global network enables companies to increase revenue and improve customer experiences across their various websites and mobile applications while always maintaining fast, consistent and reliable performance. High-profile customers include The New York Times, Airbnb Inc., Spotify Inc., Pinterest Inc. and Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc.

With its new edge cloud platform, Fastly is looking to offer cloud services that go beyond simple content delivery. To begin with, the company is debuting three new services on its edge cloud: the Fastly Web Application Firewall, Image Optimizer, and Load Balancer.

The first of these services, the Fastly Web Application Firewall, is a security service aimed at defending businesses from sophisticated, malicious attacks designed to compromise web servers and erode user experience. Fastly’s Image Optimizer meanwhile is designed to speed up image delivery by serving them up from the network edge, while eliminating the need for them to be optimized for different devices, browsers and screen resolutions. Finally, the new Load Balancer service is meant to optimize traffic distribution across the network for scalability, high availability and instant experiences.

With the new tools, developers will be able to write and deploy code instantly at the edge of the network, thereby better meeting customer’s expectations of high speed, personalized experiences with zero delay. In addition, the new tools will ensure that businesses can scale their applications automatically as they grow, simultaneously reducing the cost of infrastructure investment, the company said.

“Our goal is to help the world’s leading digital businesses operate fully at the edge for the best possible performance,” said Fastly founder and Chief Executive Artur Bergman. “We will continue to support our customers’ growth, enable continuous development and deliver fast, scalable, and secure experiences across web, mobile and IoT.”
