VMware acquires mobile app intelligence startup Apteligent

VMware Inc. Monday closed on its second acquisition in the space of a month, buying up the mobile application intelligence startup Apteligent Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Apteligent, which was originally known as Crittercism, began its life as a tool for analyzing mobile application performance and data. Later the tool evolved into a platform for developers to understand metrics such as crash reporting and networking insights, and also to analyze customer behavior and improve user experiences.

“Our data unifies silos across IT [information technology], marketing, and line of business,” Apteligent co-founders Andrew Levy and Robert Kwok wrote in a blog post announcing the sale to VMware. “We have the capability to model and predict how app performance impacts revenue, churn, and engagement. Apteligent’s focus on data insights and actionable, intelligent recommendations accelerates digital transformation for the enterprise.”

VMware said it wants to combine Apteligent’s app performance capabilities with its own digital workspace platform in order to beef up its suite of cross-cloud services.

“Apteligent adds to VMware’s portfolio of management and monitoring technologies and will offer customers end-to-end performance management from mobile devices to infrastructure across private and public clouds,” Sumit Dhawan, senior vice president of desktop products and solutions for VMware, wrote in a separate blog post.

Prior to the acquisition, Apteligent had raised almost $50 million in funding since its launch in 2011. Previous investors included Scale Venture Partners, GV, Shasta Ventures, KPCB,  AngelPad and AOL Ventures, as well as strategic investors Accenture Plc and VMware itself.

VMware’s Dhawan said the deal complements its acquisition last month of Wavefront, which makes metrics monitoring tools for applications and cross-cloud environments.
