Dell Latitude 7285, world’s first wirelessly charging laptop, goes on sale

Dell Inc.’s Latitude 7285, the company’s latest 2-in-1 notebook aimed at business users, has gone on sale. First announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the Latitude 7285 2-in-1’s biggest selling point is the device’s ability to be charged wirelessly.

The Latitude 7285’s wireless charging feature makes it the world’s first wireless charged 2-in-1 notebook. But wireless charging isn’t cheap and if you want to enjoy the convenience of wireless charging with your Dell Latitude 7285 you will need to fork over an additional $500 for both the Wireless Charging Keyboard and Mat, in addition to the already pricey Latitude 7285 standalone tablet.

Unlike the Microsoft Surface Pro and other Dell hybrids, which have slim clip-on keyboard covers, the Latitude 7285 has a more traditional keyboard dock making it resemble a regular clamshell laptop.

Here’s a look at the device’s various specifications, including pricing and availability:

Wireless charging

The Wireless Charging Keyboard and Wireless Charging Mat for the Latitude 7285 uses magnetic resonance technology from wireless power company WiTricity Corp.

When you place the Latitude 7285 and connected Wireless Charging Keyboard down on the mat, the power from the mat will bypass the keyboard and go directly to the computer, delivering 30 watts of power. The Wireless Charging Mat can’t be used on metal surfaces.

The Wireless Charging Mat currently only works with the Latitude 7285 2-in-1, but Dell is looking to expand the wireless charging technology to other products in its lineup later this year.

If you aren’t interested in wireless charging then Dell offers another compatible keyboard for the Latitude 7285. While the Productivity Keyboard doesn’t offer wireless charging it does house a 22 Whr battery allowing you to extend your battery life.

The 12.3-inch Latitude 7285 2-in-1 can transition between four modes, including a laptop, tablet, tent and slate. It comes with a 2,880 x 1,920 anti-glare display and a starting weight of 1.5 pounds (tablet only). The Wireless Charging Keyboard adds an additional 1.79 pounds while the Productivity Keyboard weighs 1.49 pounds.

When it comes to ports, the Latitude 7285 includes two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3, a USIM card slot (WWAN only) and a USD 3.0 Memory card reader.

The 12.3-inch Latitude 7285 2-in-1’s infrared camera is compatible with Windows Hello.

Under the hood

The Dell Latitude 7285 comes with processor options of an Intel Core i5 or i7 Kaby Lake processor, 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of solid state storage.

The entry-level model comes with Windows 10 Home while the other three models ship with Windows 10 Pro.

Pricing and availability

The Dell Latitude 7285 2-in-1 starts at $1,199 for an Intel Core i5-7Y54 Kaby Lake processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. While the top-of-the-range Latitude 7285 2-in-1 with Core i7-7Y75 Kaby Lake processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage will cost $1,989.

If you want to enjoy the wireless charging feature you will need to pay an additional $380 for the Wireless Charging Keyboard and $200 for the Wireless Charging Mat. Alternatively, you can save $30 and get both for a special price of $550.

A cheaper keyboard is available for $250. The Productivity Keyboard doesn’t offer wireless charging, but does contain its own battery.

You can place your orders on the Dell website, but delivery will take between 12 and 30 days depending on your chosen configurations. While both the wireless charging keyboard and mat will ship on July 28.

A 13-inch convertible version of the Dell Latitude 7000 will be available in August, pricing is expected to be released soon.
