Facebook takes on YouTube with Watch, a new video platform with original shows

Facebook Inc. on Wednesday launched “Watch,” a dedicated tab where users will be able to watch original video content created by the company’s partners.

Speculation began earlier this year that the social network would launch its premium TV shows in June, but that launch was pushed out as it continued to bring on new partners.

This isn’t the first time that Facebook has had a dedicated video tab, but the version it launched in April 2016 was home only to more generic News Feed videos that users were already seeing from Pages and friends. The Watch tab introduces original content created exclusively by Facebook’s partners.

Facebook is rolling out Watch to a small group of U.S. users on mobile, desktop and its own TV apps and to a limited group of creators, but plans to roll it out more broadly soon.

The creators of videos for Watch will also have the opportunity to monetize their videos. The split of Ad Break revenue will see partners getting 55 percent, while Facebook keeps the rest.

Facebook Watch

Watch is made up of a new type of video called shows, which can either be live or recorded. Shows can cover anything from live event coverage, cooking shows and reality TV to scripted programs, mini-documentaries and sports coverage.

If you have early access to Facebook Watch, you will see a TV icon in the bottom navigation of the main Facebook app.

The Discover section allows you to explore all the videos that are available. Shows have been split into categories, based on “New This Week,” “Most Talked About,” “What Friends Are Watching,” “Coming Soon” and “What’s Making People Laugh,” based on the number of “Haha” reactions it’s received.

The Watchlist section allows you to subscribe to show updates, by clicking the “Follow” button on the relevant video. When the creator adds new episodes these will appear in your Watchlist.

Like any videos on Facebook, viewers can add reactions and comments.

First shows coming to Watch

Some of the shows that will be available on Watch include:

Sports: Major League Baseball (will broadcast a live game each week); Golden State Warriors’ “Championship Rewind” (a behind-the scenes look of the 2016/2017 season); Univision Deportes’ “Liga MX” (live soccer match coverage); and Major League Baseball “12:25 Live” and NBA’s “WNBA All-Access.”

Show Pages for creators

Wildlife: National Geographic’s “Safari Live” (live safaris led by National Geographic’s guides); and The Dodo’s “Comeback Kids: Animal Edition”.

Reality TV: A&E’s “Bae or Bail” (couples face their fears);  All Def Digital’s “Inside the Office” (inside Russell Simmons’ hip-hop media empire); and David Lopez’s “My Social Media Life.”

Other: Tastemade’s Kitchen Little; Nas Daily; Gabby Bernstein; Mike Rowe; Billboard’s “How it Went Down;” National Geographic’s “We’re Wired that Way;” Science @ NASA; and master woodworker Tommy Mac.

Show pages

For creators, Facebook is also introducing Show Pages, which will allow viewers to see the description of a show, watch any available episodes and related videos, as well as connect with the communities that have formed around the show. Creators can also choose to post videos to the News Feed, which will be seen by users that follow their Page.

Facebook also plans to allow creators to monetize their shows through Ad Breaks, which the company has been testing over the last few months, but creators can also opt not to show ads. Creators will also be able to create sponsored shows using Facebook’s branded content tag.
