Big data analytics startup Periscope Data Inc. is the latest company to takee a crack at helping companies organize their data more effectively.

The San Francisco-based company has just revamped its flagship product to address the complete “analytics lifecycle,” enabling data teams to organize, analyze and report on data easier and faster via a single platform.

Periscope Data said its new Unified Data Platform encompasses its main data analytics offering, as well as new technologies designed to overcome problems to do with what it calls “data fragmentation.”

Most organizations face constraints as they’re dealing with complex information technology infrastructures that leave data fragmented and managed by a wide range of disconnected tools, the company said, making it difficult to analyze and gain reliable insights. Periscope Data reckons this is an acute problem, citing a 2016 study in the Harvard Business Review that said data fragmentation issues cost the average business about $10 million a year.

Essentially, what Periscope’s new Unified Data Platform does is add data warehousing capabilities to its analytics suite, providing better visibility into things such as dependency and latency so data scientists can be sure they’re using the correct data sources. They can then perform analytics on that data to gain more consistent insights that can be visualized through the interactive charts, maps and dashboards its main product provides.

“Companies have more data than they can handle — but never enough insight,” said Harry Glaser, co-founder and chief executive officer of Periscope Data. “How often does a CEO get conflicting views of data from different departments? And how often do businesses make product decisions without fully understanding customer behavior? This has to change.”

The company said its Unified Data Platform is based on the Amazon Redshift data warehouse service, which serves as a repository for all the data that an enterprise’s various business systems collect. It provides both storage and management features via the cloud, so customers can spin up a data warehouse that comes with full control over access and performance.

The platform currently only supports the SQL query language, but Periscope said it plans to add support for the R and Python programming languages in the near future.
