One of the greatest benefits to current big data trends is how it can help us all become healthier individuals. When it comes to healthcare, managing and sharing big data makes it easier for us to find the information we need, and also strives to make healthcare institutions more efficient in their patient care and evaluation methods. Some recent stats on online health information search in the U.S: apparently, 8 out of 10 internet users or about 59% of all U.S adults qualify for the category, and there’s more. The information comes from a fresh Pew Internet Project studies, and reveals some interesting figures about online health searching Big Data.
“Women, non-Hispanic whites, younger adults, and those with higher levels of education and income are more likely than other demographic groups to gather health information online.”
According to the study, 65 percent of woman gather health information online, compared to only 23 percent of men. Additionally, 63% of the white population searches health information, compared to 47% of African-Americans and 45% of Latinos. 71 percent of 18 to 29 year-old individuals utilize the internet in this form, and only 29% of people 65 or older do the same.
Two additional factors the study reveals are education and income level. 81% of college graduates scour the net for health information alongside 24% of those who only have high school education, and those with a household income of $75K or above scour the most at 84%. 41% of users with a household income of $30,000 or less use the web to find health information.
Online health tools and services are an ever-growing aspect of the web, and we’ve seen some major updates lately. That includes a newly formed partnership between Inherited Health and HealthCentral to collbarte on the distribution, use and collection of Big Data.
“Inherited Health and HealthCentral (www.HealthCentral.com) announced today that they will collaborate to allow easy access to Inherited Health’s information on over 500 inherited conditions and its online tool to collect, store and update family health history with other family members.”
Another recent update is Aza Raskin’s upcoming health tool called Massive Health. SiliconANGLE’s News Editor Kristen Nicole interviewed the co-founder about his venture, its recent backing and the potential it has on the future of individuals’ health management.
