Cisco’s HyperFlex multicloud platform gains support for containers

Cisco Systems Inc. Thursday said it’s updating its hyperconverged infrastructure platform HyperFlex to enable both multicloud deployments and management of on-premises software containers.

HyperFlex 3.0 is a platform that combines hardware from Cisco with software obtained from Springpath Inc., which the networking giant acquired in September. The latest release adds support for Microsoft Corp.’s Hyper-V hypervisor, in addition to VMware Inc.’s ESXi hypervisor, which was supported in earlier editions.

HyperFlex 3.0 also gains support for software containers, which are used by developers to abstract their applications away from the underlying hardware so they can be built just once and run on any platform. Cisco has added a new driver that provides persistent storage for containers managed using the Kubernetes orchestration platform, enabling deployment of cloud-native apps inside data centers.

This update ties into Cisco’s recently announced partnership with Google LLC Last October, the two companies said they are teaming up on a hybrid cloud play that would enable enterprises to deploy Kubernetes-based containers both on-premises and on the Google Cloud Platform.

Cisco is also integrating its multicloud software with HyperFlex 3.0. AppDynamics can now monitor the performance of hybrid applications running on HyperFlex and across multiple clouds. Meanwhile, Cisco Workload Optimization Manager can be used for workloads placement analysis on HyperFlex. The company’s cloud management and cost comparison tools CloudCenter has also been integrated so that customers can move workloads between HyperFlex and public and private cloud environments.

The update also adds greater resilience and scalability, as 64-node clusters are now possible and clusters can now stretch across data centers up to 100 kilometers apart. Another addition is support for 3.5-inch disks, which means the software can now offer storage at more significant scale.

“Our IT customers face a formidable challenge – delivering a seamless experience to developers and application owners who demand the best of both worlds between on-prem and public cloud,” said Kaustubh Das, vice president of strategy and product development and storage at Cisco’s Computing Systems Product Group, in a blog post. “Taken together, these latest innovations create a full-featured Platform for multicloud.”
