What the iPad 2 Means for Gaming, and the Specs You Need to Know

The iPad 2 was introduced by Apple yesterday, and we’ve all gotten a little taste of the next gen tablet. The iPad 2 was dubbed a game changer by some and a firm strategy by others, but as it turns outs, it’s also a pretty good game machine. Some of the most buzzed-about apps loaded onto the iPad 2s for the demonstration included FaceTime, GarageBand and iMovie; but this trio may have deflected some attention from yet another noteworthy app – Infinity Blade. An updated version of the 3D game created by Epic Games was also featured in the demo, right next to Steve Jobs himself.

CNET UK reports:

” It’s clear that the game, developed by Epic subsidiary Chair Entertainment, has struck a chord with Apple. It made a starring appearance in one of the promo videos shown by CEO Steve Jobs on-stage at last night’s launch, and was one of the apps loaded on to the demonstration iPad 2 units at the hands-on session after the event.”

iPad 2 users will be able to enjoy dozens of new additions with the updated Infinity Blade, and Epic Games VP Mark Rein highlighted his thoughts about the new platform VentureBeat.

“It’s fantastic for gaming — you saw nine times more graphical power,” he said. “Unreal Engine 3 can already take advantage of every bit of that… More detail, more textures, more shaders…”

Infinitey Blade is also based on Unreal Engine 3, and the 9x better graphic can be attributed to the duel core A5 processor featured in the iPad 2. Nevertheless, Apple didn’t lay out all the specs of its new tablet pubilcly, but two analysts are giving us some numbers. Kakeun Lee tweeted the iPad two features 512Mb of RAM, and reveled that the new A5 processor features LPDDR2 memory. Moreover, Concord Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo said the RAM would run at a clock speed of 1,066MHz, which is 266MHz faster than the iPhone 4.
