Trello gets major update to help users prioritize tasks and eliminate distractions

The popular task management service Trello, which was acquired by project management company Atlassian Inc. in 2017, is getting a major facelift.

The company today announced Trello Home, a new dashboard that provides a single view of a user’s tasks in one place, surfacing those with the highest priority to the top. The new dashboard also comes with a new notifications system that not only minimizes distractions but also lets users take actions immediately.

“Imagine a world in which everything that’s most important to you can be accessed from one place,” Trello wrote in a blog post. “No more searching through layers of boards, tasks, and comments, then trying to prioritize the lot ad hoc — this is a central base of operations for your productivity.”

The new Trello home view takes the form of a news feed that’s strikingly similar to the one seen on Facebook. It’s the first page users will see when they log in to the platform, and shows information such as which due dates are next, card activities that require immediate attention and anything else that has happened while the user has been away. With this approach, Trello is trying to push the most relevant information to the top, helping users to prioritize their tasks.

As for the revamped notification panel, this has been designed with “productivity and sanity” in mind, the company said.

The new panel allows for a lot more interaction than before. For example, users can alter things such as project due dates from directly within the notifications panel or mark individual alerts as “read” or “unread” to prioritize them. The panel can also be less of a distraction if users wish, since there’s now an option to silence particularly noisy projects that keep sending alerts every five minutes.

“To combat app notification agony, we’ve redesigned the Trello notifications panel to put the power of productivity back in your hands,” the company said. “With increased control of your notifications feed, you’ll feel the freedom to walk away from the firehose and focus on what’s most important.”

Trello said the new home and notification features are available immediately on the web and desktop versions of its software.
