Game publisher platform OpenFeint has teamed up with The9, the Chinese online Game operator and developer, for the expansion of mobile games already available to iPhone users to the Android, the OpenFeint network, and also to China.
“Fund9 is focused on bringing the best mobile apps and platform technologies to China. Our partnership with OpenFeint is a great first step. We are excited to see some great games on Android devices in China soon,” said Chris Shen, vice president at The9.
The partnership is aided by a $100 million fund coming from China and a spokesman informed that there is possibility of negotiating a revenue share for titles, on a title-by-title basis. At the moment, OpenFeint has about 250 Android games that use OpenFeint out of a total of 4,800 games players by 68 million users of OpenFeint.
The main objective of the partnership is helping independent developers lacking financial resources and with some of the best games in their portfolio to develop games for other platforms, namely Android. The criteria for the selection of the games will be the quality of the experience, past download performance in other app stores, and the talents of the actual developer.
Mobile is the main point of interest for game developers at the moment, a trend that took shape with OpenFeint’s partnership with Adknowledge for delivering a scalable freemium platform for iOS developers. During the WMC event, GetJar announced it had raiser $25 million in funding today, making some significant funds available for the expansion of its independent Android game market. Zynga as well is making advances in offering its social games on all platforms, irrespective of devices.
But not everything comes down to profit-driven marketers in the mobile games industry. Social responsibility arises sparsely, but never under a low-profile. PapayaMobile teamed up with One Economy, an NGO that provides online information to low-income communities, to deliver a series of social ‘games for good’ , enabling at the same time developers to gain access to PapayaMobile’s suite of social gaming tools and monetisation solutions.
