In a big management shakeup, execs bounce around Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg will remain at the helm of Facebook Inc., and his Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg remains at that job too, but many other execs have just been given a new role at the company.
According to a report published Tuesday by Recode and confirmed by the social network giant, the shakeup is designed to improve communication at the company. It’s thought the changes were also made to improve protection of user privacy in light of the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal.
There’s also speculation that the moves are intended to create sharper roles for each app and operation. And not least, there’s an entirely new field, at least for Facebook, that it will pursue: blockchain.
The company will be divided into three main teams, which will include “Family of Apps,” “Central Product Services” and “Platforms and Infrastructure.” In the latter team will be a smaller team designated to work on blockchain technology.
Chris Cox, who was formerly the vice president of products, will head the Family of Apps team. This will include overseeing Facebook’s core app, but also WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
Chris Daniels, who was the VP of Facebook’s Internet.org group, will take over WhatsApp following Jan Koum’s recent departure. Stan Chudnovsky, who was the head of product at Messenger, will run the Messenger team, taking over the role of David Marcus, who will now focus on blockchain. Will Cathcart, former VP of product management, will head Facebook’s core app.
Adam Mosseri, who was in charge of Facebook’s news feed, will now take over as Instagram VP of product, while the man who had that job, Kevin Weil, will go over to Marcus’ blockchain team.
Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer will head New Platforms and Infrastructure. Under him, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth will be in charge of augmented and virtual reality, a key area given Facebook’s ownership of Oculus.
Marcus will also report to “Schroep,” while engineering exec Jay Parikh will focus on privacy products. Facebook’s enterprise product, Workplace, will still be headed by former classmate and longtime product exec Kang-Xing Jin. Former IBM Watson engineer Jerome Pesenti, who currently heads Facebook’s artificial intelligence group, will also report to Schroepfer.
Javier Olivan, who has been at Facebook for over 10 years, will head Central Product Services. Mark Rabkin, currently responsible for Facebook’s ads and business platform, will report to Olivan, as will Naomi Gleit, VP of social good. Another longtime employee, Alex Schultz, who runs growth marketing and data analytics at Facebook, will report to Olivan.
