To gain an appreciation for a company’s level of digital maturity, it may be easier to know what it is not. Maintaining data centers with no cloud adoption and having mobile applications that cannot be accessed remotely would certainly qualify, according to one senior executive at Quantum Corp. who is tasked with bringing his company further down the digital maturity path.
“You have to understand how digitally mature you are,” said Omar Nawaz (pictured), global head of digital transformation at storage solutions company Quantum Corp. “Think about mobile, cloud, analytics and social. Companies that adopt those technologies can gain a certain level of efficiency and performance improvement, but the cycle is very fast.”
Nawaz spoke with Jeff Frick (@JeffFrick), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, live from SnapLogic’s headquarters in San Mateo, California. They discussed SnapLogic’s support for Quantum’s digital needs and the importance of user communication to deal with the next technology wave. (* Disclosure below.)
Quantum’s digital transformation journey was galvanized by a need to connect systems together in a simple, standardized way and make its platform available to end-users. SnapLogic’s data integration tools were instrumental in helping the company manage the transformation for both areas.
“The technology and the business are changing at such a rapid pace, unless we have experts that understand a business unit function well, we are not the best people to build those things for them,” said Nawaz, who described recent work by SnapLogic that helped Quantum use system data more broadly to make operational decisions.
Quantum has followed a strategic approach that uses “lunch and learn” meetings, webinars and support sessions to help employees understand and embrace new technologies. Communication is essential because the pace of digital change is not about to slow down.
“Now we’re seeing another wave of technologies around ‘internet of things,’ [application programming interfaces], artificial intelligence — and if you can quickly jump to that next round of technology innovation, you can continue to build those efficiencies in the company and gain a competitive advantage,” Nawaz said. “We’re constantly learning along the way.”
