Actifio extends backup software on Google Cloud for ease and simplicity

The field of copy data management may not always attract the greatest attention in the enterprise space, but it plays an increasingly important role for enterprises seeking to modernize and simplify infrastructure, especially in a hybrid world. One of the key companies in the space, Actifio Inc., specializes in copy data virtualization to improve infrastructure efficiency by reducing data duplication.

Last week, Actifio announced the availability of Actifio GO Backup-as-a-Service on the Google Cloud Platform. The software provides for simpler backup and restore, along with accelerated analytics and compliance initiatives without additional on-premises licensing.

“We take complex applications and make it look simple,” said Ashok Ramu (pictured), vice president and general manager of cloud solutions at Actifio. “That’s been our strength for the past nine years. The software as a service offering is about how to experience the same great Actifio technology with a push-button ease of use.”

Ramu spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Google Cloud Next event in San Francisco. They discussed how Actifio’s technology meets enterprise needs and its reasons for partnering with Google (see the full interview with transcript here). (* Disclosure below.)

Managing data-heavy workloads

Actifio’s goal is to help enterprises simplify the management of data-heavy workloads in complex environments. The company has found that businesses are looking to adopt SaaS offerings on a wider scale, so Actifio is focusing on providing those opportunities, according to Ramu.

“Actifio for Google particularly targets SAP Hana, SQL, and other complex workloads,” Ramu explained. “We enable the implementation, installation and ingestion of data in a minute. By the time we are done with that whole process, you are already starting to leverage Actifio technology in the cloud of your choice.”

Why the extension of a new service for Google Cloud? While Actifio’s platform is infrastructure agnostic and data can be moved seamlessly between clouds, the company is a Google Cloud Technology Partner and has been working to help enterprises access workloads and mission-critical databases on Google.

“From an infrastructure perspective, Google is the best of the breed,” Ramu said. “Last year was ‘I have a project, maybe Google.’ This year it’s ‘how do I do a, b and c with Google?’”
