Apple’s Claris returns as FileMaker rebrands and acquires cloud startup Stamplay
FileMaker Inc., the Apple Inc. subsidiary that offer a Workplace Innovation Platform, announced today at the annual DevCon 2019 developer conference that the company is rebranding itself as Claris International Inc., returning to a classic brand for the company’s software products.
“Claris stems from the Latin root ‘clarus,’ which means ‘clear, bright and shining,’” said Brad Freitag (pictured), chief executive of Claris. “Nothing better encapsulates the company’s mission: to empower the problem-solver with smart solutions that work for their business.”
The company also announced the acquisition of Stamplay, an Italian startup that builds integration connectors for developers to allow data to flow between cloud-based services and apps. That follows reports in March that Apple was poised to acquire the startup.
“With the integration of Stamplay, our customers can unlock their data across hundreds of cloud services, bringing even more utility to their apps,” Freitag said.
According to the announcement, Claris has fully integrated Stamplay’s services and will provide its capabilities through a newly unveiled offering called Claris Connect. With this service, customers will get access to a clean and simple interface that will unlock data across their apps, saving time with custom-built backend integrations.
The Connect team will continue to be led by former Stamplay CEO Giuliano Iacobelli. The FileMaker brand will continue to exist as “Claris FileMaker” and maintain its entire app hosting and development ecosystem as before.
Claris itself began as an Apple product in 1984 and FileMaker was developed under the Claris name. At the time Claris existed to develop and publish Apple’s software products, such as MacWrite and MacPaint, to separate them from Apple’s hardware and operating system activities. It existed until 1998, when the company divested itself of all but its flagship product and rebranded to FileMaker Inc. as a subsidiary of Apple.
Slightly more than two decades later, the company will once again return to its former brand. In that time FileMaker had also grown to 50,000 customers and supports more than a million users. The company also said it has been consistently profitable for more than 80 quarters.
The Claris Connect platform will become available to customers by invitation starting this fall and will become available for wider distribution in 2020. Further details about the platform and its capabilities, as well as other upcoming Claris services, are available on the company’s newly rebranded website.
