Google creates dozens more .new web shortcuts for business users

Google LLC is creating a new shortcut for business users with the launch of several new .new web domains for G Suite enterprise customers.

The launch of the .new domains today follows last year’s initial release of three specific shortcuts, namely docs.new, sheets.new and slides.new, which can be typed into the address bar of any web browser to pull up a new document, spreadsheet or presentation.

Ben Fried, Google’s vice president, chief information officer and chief domains enthusiast, explained in a blog post that Google decided to launch the .new domain extension to help customers perform more online actions in a single step. With the launch, companies will be able to register their own .new domains and create dozens of shortcuts for work-related tasks.

Some of the examples mentioned by Google include a “story.new” URL. Simply type this shortcut into the address bar and you’ll be able to start writing a blog post for the popular site Medium under your profile name. Or enter “webex.new” to launch your personal Webex meeting room in the browser. Alternatively, type “playlist.new” into the bar to create a new playlist to start adding songs on Spotify.

Enterprises want to move faster and become more agile to stay competitive and they’re increasingly looking at software companies to help them do this, said Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller. “Google is supporting that need with its .new shortcuts, which help people perform certain tasks faster. It means they have more time to focus on creative and value work, changing the future of work one process at a time,” he said.

Google said companies wishing to take advantage of the .new shortcuts can register their domains starting Dec. 2 via whats.new. All .new domains will be served over a HTTPS connection to ensure they’re secure.
